To check if cosmetics are original, buy from a trusted seller, compare the price with the market rate, and inspect the packaging, batch code, expiry date and importer sticker before you use the product. Fake makeup and skincare are common in Bangladesh, and they can cause rashes, acne or worse. These 7 simple tests take less than five minutes and work for lipstick, foundation, serum, face wash and perfume.
Why fake cosmetics are risky
Fake cosmetics are made without quality control. They may contain the wrong ingredients, too much of a chemical, or bacteria from unclean production. The result can be allergic reactions, skin irritation, breakouts or eye infections. You also lose money, because a fake product rarely works the way the real one does.
7 simple tests to check original cosmetics

1. Buy from a trusted seller
The safest test happens before you buy. Choose the brand’s own store, an authorised shop, or an online store that shows a real address, phone number and a clear return policy. Be careful with pages that have no address, no reviews and only copied photos.
2. Check the price
If a product costs far less than its usual market price, it is very likely fake, expired or old stock. Compare the price with the brand’s official page or a few well-known shops before you order.
3. Look closely at packaging and print
Original packaging has sharp, even printing, correct spelling and the same font and colour as the brand uses everywhere. Check that the seal or shrink wrap is intact. Blurry logos, spelling mistakes, loose seals or a cheap-feeling box are warning signs.
4. Match the batch code
Most cosmetics have a batch code (a short mix of letters and numbers) printed on both the box and the product itself. The two codes should be the same. A missing code, or a different code on the box and the bottle, often means the product is fake or repacked. You can also enter the code on a batch-code checker website to see the production date for many brands.
5. Check the expiry date and PAO symbol
Look for a clear expiry or manufacturing date. Many products also show a small open-jar symbol with a number like 6M or 12M. This is the PAO (period after opening): the number of months the product stays good once opened. Faded, scratched or relabelled dates are a red flag.
6. Find the importer sticker
Imported cosmetics sold in Bangladesh usually carry a sticker with the importer’s name and address, and often the price. Genuine importers put their details on the product so it can be traced. No importer information at all is a reason to be careful.
7. Test texture, colour and smell
Once you open the product, it should look, feel and smell the way it normally does. Separated liquids, a strange smell, an unusual colour or a gritty texture all suggest a fake or spoiled product. Do a patch test on the inside of your wrist first, and stop using it if your skin reacts.
Original vs fake cosmetics: quick comparison
| Check | Original | Possibly fake |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Close to market rate | Much cheaper than usual |
| Sharp, correct spelling | Blurry, spelling mistakes | |
| Seal | Intact seal or wrap | Loose, broken or missing |
| Batch code | Same on box and product | Missing or different |
| Expiry | Clear and untouched | Faded, scratched or relabelled |

What to do if you bought a fake product
- Stop using it straight away, especially on your face or eyes.
- Take clear photos of the product, box, batch code and receipt or order number.
- Contact the seller and ask for a return or refund.
- If the seller does not respond, you can file a complaint with the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP).
Frequently asked questions
How can I check if my lipstick is original?
Check the price, the print quality on the case, and whether the batch code on the box matches the one on the lipstick. An original lipstick has a smooth texture and the brand’s usual smell.
Is cheap cosmetics always fake?
Not always. Sales and offers are real. But if a product costs far below its normal price all the time, it is a warning sign.
What is a batch code?
A batch code is a short code the manufacturer prints on the product to track when and where it was made. It should be the same on the box and the product.
Can I return cosmetics if they are fake?
A trustworthy shop will accept a return if the product is not genuine or arrives damaged. Always read the shop’s return policy before you order.
